Literary Stamps

My love of reading and the French language inspired me to create a series of stamps that celebrated contemporary Parisian authors who have greatly influenced writing and literature.

I experimented with typography to create the writers’ portraits. The goal of the original artwork was to evoke and illuminate the theme, as well as have maximum impact in a minimal composition.

I included short quotes from each of their works on the back side of each stamp.

The city of Paris was the capital of the 19th century. It was a complex society of art, music, history and myth. Everyday life consisted of vying themes of idealism and despair, beauty and suffering.

Paris had an enormous impact on the mind and machinations of modern French writers such as Honore de Balzac, Guy de Maupassant, Albert Camus, Alexandre Dumas, fils, Charles Baudelaire, and Victor Hugo.

Together they covered everything from novels, poems, theatre, operas, memoirs, essays, fiction and short stories based around the capitol.
